Something special is happening in Bucerías

Bucerías is where I've been living for over 8 years. What drew me to this area was its laid-back vibe compared to neighboring Puerto Vallarta and the easy beach access amongst many other things. But, of course, Bucerías isn't perfect, and one problem it has always had is with littering. Many factors contribute to this issue, such as Highway 200 cutting through the middle of town and the laissez-faire attitude of some visitors who don't mind leaving their garbage behind.

In the United States or Canada, garbage day means wheeling out your standard garbage can to the curb, and it's collected by the garbage man. Here in Bucerías, and many parts of Mexico, the standard waste bin hasn't been adopted. So instead, citizens simply put the bag of garbage in a location, sometimes even in the middle of the road, for the garbage man to collect. A big problem with this is that stray dogs, chickens, and raccoons rummage through the bags, leaving a mess that neither the garbage man nor the citizens are going to clean up.

In addition, I haven't seen a dumpster in Mexico. Construction sites simply make a pile, and when it gets too big, a bulldozer loads it into a truck and sends it off to the dump. But while it's sitting and waiting to be hauled away, the wind blows, and the mess scatters around the neighborhood.

So what would fix this? I think it would be... rules and regulations. So, in general, it would be nice if Bucerías were cleaner, but like in all places, you take the good with the bad and hope for the best.

During COVID, Daniela and I would often collect garbage around our neighborhood. But after some time, that habit slipped away from us.

Something special is happening in Bucerías! Recently, I learned of a fantastic new initiative called Adopta Calle Bucerias. Residents of Bucerías have adopted a street or general area, and they clean that street once a week. So, Daniela and I have adopted the street outside of our home. We've been getting out there at 7:30 am because it's been getting warmer lately. If you want to learn more, you can follow this link:
